This is a guest post by Vivienne Egan. It’s not long until Christmas, so take a look at the gaming gifts that are going to be a sure-fire Christmas treat!
Buying for gamers can be hard work. Chances are you’ll be adrift when it comes to choosing a Christmas gift for them, so we’ve collated a handy cheat sheet for those feeling out of their depth and like they might have a nervous collapse in the middle of your local computer store when it comes to finding a good present.
Dishonoured (PS3, Xbox 360, PC)
This incredible-looking stealthy-action games features an awesome steam punk Victoriana aesthetic. Visual design director Viktor Antonov also created Half Life 2’s City 17, one of the most beautiful gaming landscapes of all time. Reviews have been stellar and it looks likely to become a cult classic.
Call of Duty: Black Ops II (PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Wii U)
The 10th in the highest grossing videogame franchise of all time, this is blockbuster gaming at its most extravagant. This new game boasts a new futuristic setting (previously focused on modern day warfare), the latest is the first to feature a branching story, and is guaranteed to sell absolutely millions.
Assassin’s Creed III (PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U)
The latest in a long-running series stretching back to 2007, Assassin’s Creed III has been in development since January 2010, and has a huge team at work on it, so it’s guaranteed to feature some mind-blowing visuals.
The series has been in danger of stagnating with recent releases (there’s been one every year since 2009’s Assassin’s Creed II), but this latest looks to blow them all wide open, moving the setting from renaissance Italy to the American Revolution.
Lego Lord of the Rings (Nintendo 3DS, PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Wii, PlayStation Vita)
Since Lego Star Wars came out in 2005, the series has been remaking famous franchises in a super-cute Lego mould (including Lego Indiana Jones, Batman, Pirates of the Caribbean and Harry Potter). It’s a popular series for kids, but enjoyable for adults as well: they’re light-hearted, funny, and guaranteed to sell like hotcakes, especially with The Hobbit on its way to the big screen this Christmas.
The Wii U is a potentially ground breaking Nintendo console soon to be released. It’s still an unknown quantity, as only a few launch titles have been confirmed, but if the success of the Wii is anything to go by, it will be huge. Like its predecessor, it will soon be packed full of witty and charming games to enjoy with the family.
The Wii Fit is one example of a game that sold millions of health-concerned adults, despite not being a ‘game’ in the traditional sense at all. Big launch titles include Nintendo Land and the New Super Mario Bros. U are almost here, with some blockbuster releases like Pikmin 3 expected in the future.
